Recently I took a course offered by the Mental Health Commission of Canada called Mental Health First Aid. This course was extremely beneficial to me and provided me with a lot of resources, vocabulary, and awareness surrounding the mental health system in Canada and mental illness in general.
I highly recommend anyone and everyone I know to take this course. I learned that one in three Canadians will experience a mental health problem at some point in their life. Wouldn’t it be useful to equip yourself and have the awareness to be a support to others when and if mental illness becomes a reality?
The course taught me to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health problems, provide initial help at a time of distress, and guide a person towards professional help where needed. All valuable and useful tools!
The Mental Health Commission of Canada also provides a course called Mental Health First Aid for Adults who Interact with Youth. Since mental health problems often first develop during adolescence, with half of all mental disorders beginning by age 14, this course can really be a help to those who work with youth or interact with them often (parents!).
Please forward this post on to your friends and family who you believe would benefit by learning more about Mental Health First Aid.
